COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Coordinators (Ann Ward) – Currently checking out web site and trying to get information updated. If any changes need to be made, please let Ann know. We are trying to get contact information updated so teachers can utilize us more. Beaver Days was a BIG success! At least 35 volunteers helped out. First day of school was less confusing this year. Pictures were the only glitch. Retakes will be October 28th. Next year information needs to be clearer as to the time frame. Many people thought the kids were to be there the whole time. We have around 200 returned volunteer forms. The information is being organized and lists will be sent to committee heads soon.

Counseling (Laurie Scott ) – Counseling office appreciated all the help. Things ran very smoothly. The second day was a little more confusing. Suggestion was made to lock in volunteers for this second day so we know how many to count on. There were discussions about confidentiality and whether confidentiality agreements need to be signed. Michele and Anne will look into the logistics of this.

Classroom (Karen Cunningham) - Possibility of getting volunteer request forms on the web site so teachers can utilize volunteers more.

CCC (Martha Callahan) – The CCC has moved to the old teacher lounge. Things are not as we planned (no window). As of now, there are no bookshelves, tables, chairs… If you have any comments or concerns about this, please let the school know. We are currently getting the volunteer list together. We staff the CCC from 7:30 – 3:00. Shifts are 2 hours and we would like volunteers to volunteer at least twice a month. There is an upcoming Oregon public college program on September 29th. As of now, they are planning to use students as volunteers.

Newsletter – First newsletter went out last week. The newsletter is put together the 2nd Thursday of every month at 9:00 in the community room. If you want to help out, please stop by.

Staff Appreciation – We have one event before winter break and one in the spring. More information will follow.

Print shop – Currently we are in need of a coordinator. This position would be to schedule volunteers to help with upcoming printing needs. Mark Anderson will look into future printing needs.

Mentoring (Denise Velaski) – The mentoring program is still in the works. The idea is to have adults in the school or community come in and help kids with the college application process. More information will follow.

VICE PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:

James Johnston is one of the new Vice Principal’s. He is very impressed with the tradition that Beaverton has to offer.

Beaver Day – This was a huge success. Approximately 65-70% of the students took advantage of Beaver Day. Areas to improve on next year: 1) letter explaining time frame a little better, 2) advertise in the spring about Beaver Day, 3) shorter time, and 4) moving some of the booths around. Parent volunteers were a big help.

Student body cards have a new number on them. This has caused a little confusion. The number listed is the student testing number and the scan number is the student ID number. Student ID numbers have not changed. Not too sure how it happened, but needs to be changed next year.

CCC – There was considerable discussion about the visibility of the CCC since the window wasn’t put in. James will look into other possibilities including a bigger sign to draw attention to the CCC and make it more welcoming for students.

Cafeteria is still crowded. Lunch lines have started to go down a little. We can’t put anymore tables in the lunchroom, but found a surplus of chairs that we might be able to use. We are still evaluating the subject.

Originally we were to use Merl Davies gym for classes, but the night before school was to start we found out that wouldn’t work. Hopefully the classrooms in the old cafeteria will be completed by November and for sure by the second semester.

District officials met at Beaverton for a custodian walk through. They discovered that there were areas that the custodians couldn’t get to in the time they were allowed. Routes needed to be revised. District is looking into hiring another janitor.

Policies have gotten stricter as to student parking in the front and amount of time students are in the halls. The administration has been trying to become more visible to enforce these rules.

Baseball and Softball fields are on track. There have been a few modifications, but basically the project is running smoothly.

UPCOMING EVENTS – September 28 is BHS College Planning night at 7:00 p.m. Homecoming will be October 2nd. There won’t be a bonfire this year. Instead there will be a BBQ and a carnival. Homecoming dance will start at 8:00. October 7 is Back to School night starting at 7:00.

Don’t forget to look at the BHS website. Announcements are posted daily.

Principal Tea will be at our next meeting, October 1 at 9:00 in the community room. This gives old and new a chance to meet the new principal and find out what’s happening in Beaverton. If you can bring anything to the tea, please let Michele and Anne know.

Meeting adjourned at 11:00 a.m.
