BHS Volunteer Committee Minutes 09/15/06
Meeting called to order at 9:05 am
Introductions
were made.
Michele
and Anne introduced themselves, and Michele asked some of
the committee chairs to give a brief description of their
duties and needs for volunteers.
MENTORING:
Denise
BHS received a small learning community grant several years
ago. Rita Morgan and Denise Velaski head up this program.
Adults meet one on one with students to provide them with
an extra adult role model in their lives. They are especially
in need of men for the program. If anyone knows of a man
who would be interested in volunteering have them contact
Denise or Rita.
STAFF
APPRECIATION: Toni and Nanci
Tuesday, December 12th is the first staff appreciation day
this year. We send e-mails to all volunteers requesting
donated food. The staff room is decorated and we serve a
wonderful banquet to the staff!
NEWSLETTER:
Jane
The deadline to put information into the newsletter is now
the first Wednesday of each month. Mailing is the second
Thursday.
BOOSTER
CLUB: Sharon
The booster club handles fundraising and the disbursement
of funds to all the different sports, clubs and activities.
Each sport and club has a representative on the booster
club and they handle staffing the concession stands. That
allows them to ask for money when it is needed. Meetings
are the second Tuesday of each month in the library at 7:00.
GRAD
NIGHT COMMITTEE:
This committee is not just for senior parents!!!! They encourage
other parents to get involved so when it is time for their
student to graduate, they know what to do! October 21st
is the Texas Hold ‘em Tournament. Come one come all!
It’s lots of fun, and you don’t need to know
how to play poker to have a good time.

from left column)
BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT: is October 4th.
VOLUNTEER
GUIDELINES:
Please be sure to sign in and identify yourself with a nametag.
We have the new sign in computer in the office and are just
finishing working out the bugs so we can send e-mails using
our new program. Please always remember to maintain confidentiality
when volunteering at the school.
BEAVER
DAYS/FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL:
There was some discussion regarding Beaver Days and the first
day of school. It was felt that possible the ESL students
were not fully served. Possibly, next year we could have parents
act as guides on the first day. We may also look for parents
who can speak a second language. We will continue the discussion
next month when Ronda is here because she is in charge of
Beaver Days and First Day planning.
PRINCIPAL’S
REPORT: Janice Adams
Janice has been with Beaverton High School for two complete
years now and is starting her third year. She was a parent
here when her children attended Beaverton, and has been with
the district for 20 years. She feels that this is a community
that supports its schools and a district that responds to
its community.
Please
note the new cell phone policy that is being strictly enforced.
“Off and away” has become the requirement because
cell phones were too much of a distraction in class. The new
policy has been working very well.
“Lock
In”- The Police arrived at Beaverton after having received
a cell phone 911 call indicating there was a fight with a
gun at the high school. They did a complete walk through of
the entire facility to determine it was safe, before students
were allowed to leave the room they were in. (A “Lock
Out” occurs when there is an incident outside of the
school, in the community.)
Janice
passed out some information on the bond indicating changes
that have occurred due to new costs of building materials.
Some items have been cut or reduced because the expense is
greater now.
Denise
Velaski spoke at length about the bond and encouraged us to
vote yes. (She had filed a building use permit.)
Please
join us for Happy Hour at Raccoon Lodge on Thursday, September
28th, at 4:30pm.
