BHS
Volunteer Meeting Minutes
October 7, 2005
BHS Volunteer Committee Minutes 10/7/05
Principal’s Coffee/Volunteer Orientation
34 members present
Meeting called to order at 9:00 am
Introductions were made.
PRINCIPAL’S
REPORT: Janice Adams
Back to School Night: We had a great turnout and the majority
of the teachers were able to be in the classrooms this year.
Our
enrollment is 2060 students. This means we will receive some
extra money from the district, which will enable us to add
one math skills class and an extra access tutorial. Our enrollment
is projected to decrease slightly over the next 5-10 years.
Administrative
transfers have been cut off as of 9/12 (we are still allowing
juniors and seniors who have been here for their freshman/sophomore
years). There are some students in the BHS attendance area
who attend Southridge, although they have also limited new
transfers.
We
have 160 staff of these 105 are teachers.
Merle
Davies is projected to close June 2006. The first portable
of at least 4 and possibly 8 has arrived. Each portable houses
2 classrooms. There are currently 16 classrooms in Merle Davies.
Starting October 31st the Terra Nova Program will be housed
in the current portable. The 2nd portable will arrive by the
end of November. We will not have the use of the portables
this year unless the weather becomes extreme and makes it
necessary to use them.
There
will be an after the game dance tonight called the Hurricane
Hustle. All funds raised will be used for Hurricane relief.
The admission is $5.00. The administration reconsidered their
original decision and allowed students to establish a dance
that will be held each year to benefit something.
School
Improvement Plan: We are working on communication. We have
made progress on all the goals we set last year. Although
we did not quite attain every one of the goals we did make
progress on each one. Thanks to all the parent volunteers
who do so much to keep the school running smoothly.
A
question was raised about CIM. It is not necessary, at this
point, to attain a CIM to graduate but the staff is working
toward increasing the numbers of students who do achieve it.
Janice is going to look in to providing more communication
about the CIM. It comes form a program called “scorebook”.
Janice also feels that in regards to CIM “what they
are learning to get there is what’s meaningful”.
BHS
is encouraging all teachers to put their homework assignments
onto their own website. It is possible grade information will
be available online at some future date.
We
have a great “new teacher” mentor program. Established
teachers and administrators work with new teachers we hire
to work at BHS.
The
new counselor search is going well. There are interviews later
today and the search will continue until a counselor is found.
VICE-PRINCIPAL’S FOLLOW UP REPORT:
Ronda Haun
Ronda provided a flyer with the answers to the questions asked
at our volunteer committee meeting last month. There are a
total of 265 students with late arrival and 233 with early
release privileges. They are mostly seniors with just a handful
of juniors in each category.
Student
Transfers:
Out of district to BHS: 0
To BHS from other Beaverton Schools: 105
Out of BHS to other Beaverton Schools: 62
Students
serving on Student Council must have a parent permission form
that allows them to go off campus to conduct Student Council
business with the approval of the teacher.
Dances:
We have 5 dances and are allowing a sixth this year to support
Hurricane Katrina Victims. It is an after game dance this
Friday and will cost $5.00 at the door. The administration
has asked Student Council to look at the dance schedule for
next year and organize a dance to support a worthy cause each
year.
Homecoming
dance is not a semi-formal dance as was reported in some locations.
The dress is nice clothes/interview attire. It is hoped all
students will be included and scholarships are available if
needed.

COMMITTEE
REPORTS:
VOLUNTEER
ORIENTATION: Michele Mitchell and Anne Ward
Michele handed out a flyer with some guidelines for volunteers
at Beaverton High School. Some of the most important guidelines
are: Wear identification tags, act in a professional manner,
be dependable and always maintain confidentiality. Please
see the attached flyer for more detailed information.
We are completing our new volunteer e-mail
list. It should be finished soon.
Following is a brief description of what
is involved if you volunteer for each of our different committees:
COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER: Martha and Julie
Volunteers work 1 ½ hour shifts two times a month and
help with filing, financial aid and scholarship information,
etc. There is a training on Monday at 9:30 for new volunteers.
The “Connections” program matches
previous volunteers from the CCC with 10 students who are
juniors. These volunteers (17 so far) will work with their
students helping them with the process of applying to college
or whatever they choose to do after they graduate from Beaverton.
They will work with the same group of students until the end
of their senior year when they graduate.
CLASSROOM VOLUNTEERS: Karen
Mostly we have needs for one time event volunteers, but currently
there is a request for help with an ongoing homework club.
They will meet Mon-Thurs from 2:30-4:30 in room 162.
COUNSELING: Judy
The counseling department has several new staff members. There
is a new secretary named Debbie who came from Sunset, and
they are looking to hire a new counselor. They have 5-6 volunteers
who have worked there in the past and this seems to be sufficient.
Counselors are all meeting with the seniors next month.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES: Leslie
We were not asked to find chaperones for the added dance this
Friday. Apparently the students who organized the dance were
responsible for finding the chaperones.
NEWSLETTER: Jane
They will meet next Thursday at 9:00 in the conference room.
The community room is no longer available, therefore only
approximately 10 people are needed to help each month. They
prepare the newsletter to go out by taping the edges and putting
on the labels while keeping them in order.
ADVISORY SUPPORT: Dori Killion is the new
chairperson for this committee. Responsibilities include copying
varied amounts of printouts for advisory in advance each week.
Give Dori a call if you’d like to help with this: 503-244-9474
SCHOLARSHIPS: Lori and Denise
They put together a list every other week of all available
scholarships. It is then published to be handed out and put
on the web.
STAFF APPRECIATION: Toni and Laurie
Two times each year we bring in food for all the staff for
lunch. We will hold the first luncheon just before the winter
holiday break.
VOLUNTEER WEB PAGE: Anne
There is nothing new at the moment, but visit our website
at www.bhsvolunteers.org.
MENTORING: Denise
Volunteers meet with their student once a week and talk to
them about anything they need advice on. Some are struggling
academically or socially and this program provides them with
another positive role model.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:05
