COMMITTEE
REPORTS:
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Coordinators
(Michele & Anne) – The Volunteer Committee is a
problem solving group. Issues are brought up during our meetings
and we find the volunteers to help out. People are sometimes
confused about the difference between the Volunteer Committee
and the Booster Club. The Booster club deals with extracurricular
activities. They run the concessions and divvy up the profits
to the various organizations at Beaverton. They meet the second
Wednesday of every month at 7:00 in the Library. The Volunteer
Committee deals with the academic side of Beaverton. If teachers
or staff needs assistance, they will go to the volunteer committee.
Our meetings are the first Friday of every month at 9:00 a.m.
in the Community Room at Beaverton. If you have any questions,
the website is a great place to go (BHSvolunteers.org). Listed
on this site are upcoming volunteer opportunities, contact
information and meeting notices. A letter has been sent out
to each staff member explaining what we do and contact information.
We are hoping they will utilize us more in the future.
CCC (Michele) – Martha and Julie are in charge of the
volunteers this year. The CCC has currently moved across the
hall into the old staff room (right across from the attendance
area). We still don’t have any tables and chairs, but
are slowly getting items filed and put away. This is a great
place to go (and to work in) to find out information about
colleges, the college application process, job openings and
volunteer opportunities.
Classroom (Karen) – Many request for volunteers in this
area are for one time jobs. If you have any special talents
that teachers might be able to use, please let Karen know.
There were about 278 volunteer forms returned to us. Most
of the committees should be contacting their volunteers in
the near future.
Counseling (Laurie) – There are two main areas that
the counseling office needs our help. The first is to help
with the beginning of school and the beginning of the new
semester. We had a lot of volunteers helping out this year
and everything went pretty smoothly. The other area is with
filing in the vault and sending out records. The counseling
department would like someone to come in on a regular basis.
There will be training available.
Student Activities (Barbee) – Her job is to act as liaison
between Student Council and LINK.
Library & Print Shop (Mark) – The library is looking
for help with shelving materials and help with student research
including working with the computers. The print shop volunteers
are still needed to help with large printing projects. This
is on an as needed basis.
Newsletter (Priscilla) – Our job is to help get the
newsletters out by putting labels on the letters. We meet
in the Community Room around 9:00 a.m. usually the second
Wednesday or Thursday. We will be getting together on October
7 and November 10.
Staff Appreciation – There are usually two events during
the year. The first will most likely be the week before winter
break. This is our chance to say “Thanks” to the
staff for all their hard work.

Mentoring
(Denise) - This year we will have a mentoring program. A volunteer
will have a group of kids and help walk them through the college
application process. More information will follow at a later
date.
MISCELLANEOUS:
Grad Night (Barbee) – This is an all night party (10:00
p.m. – 5:00 a.m.) after graduation. It is drug free
and alcohol free party. The location is a surprise and there
are lots of activities to keep everyone’s interest.
We usually have about ¾ of the senior class participating.
We are looking for parents that don’t have seniors to
help with this party. Grad Night meetings are the 3rd Wednesday
of every month at 7:00 p.m.
A reminder that while volunteering, confidentiality is very
important. There has been some talk about having volunteers
sign confidentiality forms which will be keep on file.
Parking
– The administration has been good about making sure
the students aren’t parking in the visitor spots in
front of the school. These parking spaces are available for
volunteers as well as visitors. There are also parking spaces
in the back of the school, or in the parking lots on Erickson.
PRINCIPAL’S
COMMENTS:
For the last 10 years her dream has been to become a principal
at BHS. She has two children that have graduated from BHS
in the 90’s.
One of the few changes made this year was to have the administration
become more visible to both the students and the teachers.
Another goal is to make sure she gets back to parents, kids,
and community if they have questions.
The school board has set goals for the schools to improve
literacy and math gains for each student. Specific framework
for this plan will be submitted on October 4.
The new classroom (the old cafeteria area) should be completed
by mid-November. There will be 6 classrooms.
The Pond, located in the cafeteria, is now open before and
after school and during lunch.
A special thank you was given to all volunteers at Beaverton
that help make the school so successful. A challenge was made
to these volunteers to reach out and get others involved who
normally aren’t. Everyone is welcome and appreciated
at Beaverton.
Next meeting November 5, 2004.
