people in attendance
• It was suggested that the email reminder of the meeting
might be helpful, the calendar postcards were not delivered
to some homes on time.
• The Volunteers web page is updated. There is also
a new link to Grad Night on the main BHS page.
• Committee Reports
-
Newsletter - November mailing prep will be November 10th
-
Staff
Appreciation - The date for this semester is December
14th. Items should be brought to the staff room in the
new cafe that morning. Everything is welcome, from main
dish to desserts.
-
College
Career Center - Construction is continuing and the center
is in disarray. Regular volunteer shifts have started.
The current estimate for furniture in the CCC is now pushed
out to Winter Break. The construction will not include
windows, but James Johnston identified a program that
accepts requests for future school improvements. Martha
Callahan is reviewing the request process.

• James Johnston reported out
on several issues:
-
Student ID - The number on student ID cards is still being
reviewed. It appears that the ID vendor assumed a request
from one school to change the number applied to all schools.
It will be sorted out for next year. Student IDs are linked
to cafeteria accounts - that number can be changed from
student ID number to a random number upon request.
-
Building
Temperature - Mr. Johnston is working on the heat issues.
Some are related to the current construction, some are
attributed to faulty and/or old equipment. Both the contractor
and the district facilities folks are working with Mr.
Johnston on solutions.
-
Dances
- Concern over inappropriate sexual dancing at Homecoming
led the staff to review long standing Dance Guidelines
with ASB. The guidelines have not been published or enforced
for several years. ASB worked with staff to update the
guidelines, adding an item concerning sexual dancing,
grinding and groping.
-
Cafeteria
Crowding - Some tables and chairs have been added to the
cafeteria, space is still tight. Some rules about eating
outside of the cafeteria have been amended to ease the
crowding.
-
Gang
Activity - An increase in gang activity has been noticed,
including non-BHS student gang members observed near campus.
Staff is working closely with Beaverton Police Department
to shut down any gang behavior immediately. Mr. Johnston
is leading an effort to identify activities that could
be alternatives to gangs for the students who are attracted
to gangs.
-
General Comments – James also reported that he has
been in a lot of classrooms and is impressed with the
level of teaching and student learning that is taking
place.
