BHS Volunteer Committee Minutes 05/03/07
Meeting called to order 9:00

Introductions were made.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Ronda
We are doing AP or IB testing every day in the month of May.

There is a new policy for Valedictorians and Salutatorians next year at BHS. There will be one of each. It will be the student with the highest weighted grade point average. The goal is to have a district wide policy soon.

A language arts adoption will occur next year. This summer we will do some aligning with our science curriculum. In three years it will be required to take three years of science to graduate.

There is an attendance committee forming to create a policy and hold students accountable.

We have received a library grant of $10,000 over the last three years. Jill has done a fantastic job updating the library materials. We will have the grant next year also.

June 25-Aug 2 are the dates for summer school this year. We will again offer free breakfast and lunch to students and community members in need. Students with a D or F in reading, writing or math or incoming freshmen needing help will be the students attending summer school.

COUNSELING: Derek Nekoba
Junior conferences occurred in April. Juniors met one on one with their counselor and discussed post high school planning; how to research schools and scholarships.

Counselors are meeting with sophomores early in May in advisory to discuss how to get into a college and provide information about financial aid.

There were at least two local scholarships this year that no one applied for. Counselors are attempting to let students know about these scholarships so students will apply.

Counseling is preparing for seniors to graduate on June 11th. The awards and recognition assembly is May 31st.

The counseling department spends a lot of time getting into classrooms and trying to reach more students.

MINUTES approved for March and April.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATORS: Michele and Anne
There was some discussion about how we should thank volunteers this year.

The possibility of having a presentation for freshmen/new parents to go to during Beaver Days was discussed. The date will be early again next year.

We need to confirm the date for the Principal tea/welcome.

The following committee positions are open next year:
Staff Appreciation with Nanci Noyer
Website
Scholarships
Volunteer Coordinators
Student Activities
Newsletter

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Staff Appreciation: Approximately 40 people volunteered to deliver food and items for the luncheon on May 16th.

COLLEGE AND CARRER CENTER: Kevinne Moran
April was mock interview month. We had 80 interviewers who met with 330 juniors. Interviews were held in the library and volunteers assured everything ran smoothly. Lunch was provided to all volunteers and interviewers.

May 1 was decision day. Students came to the CCC to fill out a star and tell us what they are doing next year. We have decided it was the treats that really got the students to come in! We have 248 stars so far and are working on getting information for the rest of the senior class.

Senior Advice Day: Current seniors will come and meet with juniors to give them advice for next year. We may even have some college students who are already home stop by with advice. The date will be announced soon for this event!
