BHS Volunteer Meeting Minutes
May 5, 2006

Principal’s Tea
25 members present
Meeting called to order at 9:00 am
Introductions were made.

Michele welcomed everyone and gave a brief history of our committee. In 1996 the Booster Club was very strong and handled athletics and clubs but not daytime volunteering, so they began the process of organizing a volunteer group. This committee has grown through the years, started a website, and increased attendance at the meetings. Staff began to use volunteers during the day in the library, classrooms, the college and career center, counseling, newsletter, mentoring, etc. The Booster Club continues to support extra-curricular activities and do fundraising, then disperses those funds.

The committee chairs reported on their positions and gave a brief overview of what they do.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:
Janice briefly discussed our School Improvement Progress Report. Site Council prepares the progress narrative about Beaverton High School.

PARENT FORUMS:
We will have a Parent Forum on May 17th about The Adolescent Brain. Brain-Based research shows that student’s brains will not be fully developed until they are 25 years old.

Internet concerns is another topic we would like to cover. The Oregon Justice Department will lead a forum on this topic at the beginning of next year.

We would like to have 3 forums each year.

MERLE DAVIES:
The old brick building in the front of the school was an elementary school, then an elementary/middle school, Aloha High School opened there before their building was complete, then it became part of our campus.

It is currently in a state of disrepair and would cost more to fix than to partially tear down and re-construct. It will close at the end of this year and 5 portables (10 classrooms) will be used to replace the 16 classrooms currently in Merle Davies.

The district is looking at using the new Merle Davies to create another options high school for the health careers program. It is currently slated to be a new Health Career’s Magnet Academy and will open in 2008. The new facility will be approximately 40,000 square feet unless we can find a way to develop more parking. Janice is on the design team. They are looking at the possibility of obtaining a grant to establish the curriculum part of the program.

ENROLLMENT/FUTURE FUNDING:
Enrollment this year is 2076 and we are forecasted at 2030 next year.

We are receiving additional funding next year to reduce class size. For example, Algebra 1 will change from a 31:1 ratio to 27:1. Spanish, math and most freshmen core classes will have reduced sizes next year.

ACT SCORES:
After receiving the ACT scores counselors have begun contacting certain students to discuss taking a more rigorous course load. We are also encouraging seniors to take a full course load.

WORLD LANGUAGES AT MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL:
Money is being put into the middle schools next year for world languages and the state is increasing requirements.

We adjourned the meeting and had a social time, with refreshments, to further welcome the middle school parents in attendance.
