BHS Volunteer Meeting Minutes
June 1, 2007
BHS Volunteer Committee Minutes 06/01/07
Meeting called to order 9:00
Minutes approved for May.
Introductions were made.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Janice Adams
The senior awards assembly on May 31st was very rewarding
and a wonderful event.
Staffing:
Walter Bates is leaving BHS at the end of this year to teach
band at the International School of Beaverton. Prospects
for the position did guest conducting during the last two
weeks of school.
We hired two new math teachers for next year. Jacob Barron
will be returning from Willamette and Brett Michael who
is returning to Oregon from California. Both will also be
involved in the basketball program.
We continue to work with staff to help each teacher understand
the value of teacher websites and the communication they
provide with families and students. At some point it may
become a district requirement that all teachers post information
to a website, but it is not required now.
ISIS student management system has a component called “grade
book” that has a parent communication element that
is being installed this year as a pilot program.
Technology:
We have added web design and computer animation which doubled
the enrollment in our technology department. We will use
Dream Weaver software and have purchased 36 new Dell PCs.
We will have 8 technology classes running every day next
year.
June 12th a proposal was sent to Jerry Colonna and the
Beaverton School District to recreate Merle Davies as a
technology center with infrastructure to support technology
with current day standards and into the future. The plan
was to create auditorium style rooms with visual and audio
and webinar capabilities that could be used by BHS in the
daytime and also used in the evenings and during the summer
for teacher training and more.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATORS: Michele & Anne
There was some discussion about how we should thank volunteers
this year.
The possibility of having a presentation for freshmen/new
parents to go to during Beaver Days was discussed. The date
will be early again next year.
We need to confirm the date for the Principal tea/welcome.
Options Programs:
Health Science Academy: 9th grade only and will be housed
at the Capital Center next year with an enrollment of 100
students.
Health Careers at BHS will be a lottery system now in addition
to all other magnet academies.
Career Pathways at BHS Next Year:
-- Business and Marketing
-- Fine Arts
-- Environmental Science
-- Health Careers is a district option but also serves as
a career pathway for BHS students.
Start Time Next Year:
We will not be starting high school earlier each day next
year as was being discussed. The school district has decided
to contract for outside transportation services to bring all
options programs on board and keep existing start times the
same. In the future the possibility of starting the high schools
a little later is even being considered.
COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER:
We have added 5 new computers to use to help students and
their families with the financial aid forms.
The seniors wrote some helpful advice for the juniors to
aid them in the process of searching for colleges next year.
The advice is on pages around he CCC and Kevinne will be preparing
a typed document for any who are interested.
We need new volunteers for the Connections Program.
GENERAL VOLUNTEER COMMITTEE:
We discussed producing a “Beaverton 101 Handbook”
with parent to parent advice. We may have a meeting to give
these out with a discussion group for new parents.
We also discussed athletics and the high participation fees.
We would like to find a way to get more students involved.
