BHS Volunteer Committee Minutes 02/02/07
Meeting called to order 9:07

Introductions were made.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Ronda
On February 1st we began having 55 minute advisories every Thursday for 5 weeks. This week students received information about the ACT test to be taken on Monday February 12th and will begin receiving forecasting information in upcoming Thursday advisories.

There has been discussion district wide about having only one valedictorian per school. No change will be made this year but in the future Beaverton is considering going to one valedictorian with the highest weighted grade point average.

The girl’s softball team hosted a spaghetti feed/silent auction fundraiser on February 2nd.

2/13 begins Mardi Gras week.
2/14 is Jam the Dam.
Friday 2/16 is the school-wide assembly.
Saturday 2/17 is the Mardi Gras dance.

The Fire Marshall inspected the building and recommended several changes. The three Pepsi machines were removed from the main hall by the gym because he felt they were an obstruction. We also had some work done on some of the lighting.

There was a burglary in the building on January 20th. Police responded immediately and the person was caught.

New furniture has been ordered for the student center. A student committee helped with the selection.

2nd semester schedule hand-out went well and we had a smooth start to the semester. Counselors have not allowed students to change a class without a strong reason like a career change or change in level.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR: Anne
Anne requested suggestions for guest speakers if there was anyone we would be interested in hearing from. It was requested Karen Stabeno from the counseling office speak to us about how things work in their department.

We will have the Principal’s Coffee in June but will host another in September that will include the parents of the new freshmen rather than inviting 8th grade parents to attend the coffee at the end of the year.

COLLEGE AND CARREER CENTER: Martha
Volunteers form the Connections program for both the classes of 2007 and 2008 met with Kevinne and Linda and exchanged information with each other.

The CCC will hold mock interviews for the entire junior class on April 17th and 18th. We need volunteers to interview students if anyone is interested.

A new volunteer is needed to take over the scholarship list from Denise next year.

College bound senior’s acceptance list is on the wall outside the counseling office!

COUNSELING:
A midyear transcript “party” occurred on Tuesday 2/6 to send out transcripts to colleges requested by BHS students.

Students need to let their counselors know if any transcripts need to be sent out.

STUDENT LIAISON: Leslie
Winter Formal went well. Montgomery Park was a nice location, although the floor flexed a great deal which was an interesting sensation.

The Mardi Gras dance will be held on Saturday February 17th at the Portland Art Museum.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Denise
There are scholarships on the list for students who are not seniors. Be sure to check it!

Getcollegefunds.com is a good location to look for scholarships.
Sharpie.com has a drawing for $25,000.
Bank of America has a drawing in their branches.
Jiffy Lube also has a drawing for a scholarship.

Students today are graduating with a huge amount of debt after college so it is important to have kids look at scholarships as an additional source of funding.

NEWSLETTER: Jane
Newsletter mailing will happen Thursday 2/15.
