BHS Volunteer Meeting Minutes
December 2006

Meeting called to order 9:00

Introductions were made.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Ronda
November Recap-
So far over 6000 cans of food have been collected for the food drive. More cans and money are still being turned in. There is a competition between the fourth period classes.

The Mock interview day was hugely successful. It was well received by the kids. We also had people come in later in the day and interview students in their own language.

The blood drive went well.

8th Grade preview night was well attended. We had approximately 350 parents and 8th graders in the auditorium. They then attended 4 different sessions.

December Recap-
SAT’s and ACT’s were given two weekends in a row in December.

Winter One Act performances occurred for two weekends in December and tryouts for Bye Bye Birdie, the Spring Musical, occurred at the beginning of the month.

December 5th - Financial Aid Information Night at Sunset High School

Freshmen Parent Orientation Night-Discussion has occurred and interest exists to make this event happen! The leadership committee is looking into how this could be handled and will discuss it at their next meeting. The Volunteer Committee and the Booster Club could speak at the event about how parents can get involved at BHS.

Merle Davies-The Beaverton High School Visioning Committee is looking at what may happen with Merle Davies, as well as many other things.

There was some discussion about how long kids have to pass between classes. 5 minutes is not very long. There was some discussion of lengthening the passing time, but at this point they are not planning to.

Lockers-Students can now select their locker partner and work with the attendance office to find a location that is near their classes.

The pathways to the portables have been paved, and lighting will be installed soon.

Handicapped access to the business wing is being added by installing an electronic chair ramp.

Parking for students with late start can be found by the tennis courts.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATORS: Anne and Michele X’s are being added to our e-mail addresses on the volunteer website so the e-mails cannot be used found by searches looking to do mass e-mails.

We still need a classroom volunteer coordinator. Michele is going to give the names of volunteers who have signed up to work in the classrooms directly to the teachers.

Mr. Nieslanik may be at our January meeting to give an update on school activities.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER: Julie
105 seniors completed the mock interview process. It is part of a government requirement to finish career ed. and get a diploma.

Junior Connections volunteers have started meeting with their students. Seniors Connections people are helping with applications and deadlines. The CCC has been busy!

January 20th at all PCC campuses there is another financial aid information night. (In addition to the one at Sunset H.S. on December 5th.)

COUNSELING:
All is running smoothly. Karen Stabeno used 6 volunteers on December 5th to help check ACT forms for the Juniors.

ACTIVITIES: Leslie
Winter Formal is in January this year. We will be looking for chaperones!

MENTORS: Denise
Everything is working well.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Denise
Look at the list occasionally, regardless of the age of your student. The OSAC, Oregon Student Assistance Form, is due in February.

STAFF APPRECIATION: Toni
Tuesday December 12th is the next staff appreciation luncheon. Nancy needs help decorating the night before. Our theme is Hawaiian this year!

GRAD NIGHT
December 5th Pizzacato is hosting a fundraiser for Grad Night.

BOOSTER CLUB: Sharon
The Pepsi contract is scheduled to be changed as part of a district wide wellness program. Pepsi sales would be eliminated both during and after school. This would have a huge effect on sales at the Booster Club concession stands where a large amount of the Booster Club funds are raised.

FUNDRAISING:
There are fundraising links on the main page of the BHS Website. There is a list of all the school clubs and sports doing fundraising, so you can click and see what is available.
