BHS Volunteer Meeting Minutes
April 6, 2007
BHS Volunteer Committee Minutes 04/06/07
Meeting called to order 9:00
Introductions were made.
VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Ronda
Janice is working on staffing for next year. Forecasting
is complete. Staffing will be approximately the same next
year with maybe 1 or 2 fewer teachers. The freshmen class
will have around 450 students.
Summer school will be held at BHS again this summer. It
will be funded through the ESL welcome center. There will
be a focus on science and math. We will offer a free and
reduced breakfast and lunch program for students and community
families.
The Visioning Committee will take their proposal to the
district office this month. It appears we are moving forward
with the tech center for Merle Davies. The infrastructure
within the core of the building will be very high tech.
Students will be able to sit in lab/lecture rooms and watch
live OHSU heart transplants.
BHS has requested 3 sets of classroom furniture and additional
folding chairs using Equity Fund dollars. We have also purchased
4 sets of classroom furniture using funds from our own budget.
Replacement tables have been ordered for the art/ceramics
classroom, as well as 12 additional art stools. We are in
the process of ordering tack boards so student art can be
hung in the student center.
Portable bleachers are being ordered to provide spectator
space for the tennis courts.
Preliminary drawings are being reviewed for the new locker/team
room space.

STUDENT
ACTIVITIES: David Nieslanik
Staff is evaluating the morning announcements to determine
if they should be read aloud. Beginning April 16th they were
posted in four different locations around the school, on the
website and in teachers’ classrooms. It is possible
they will be read aloud once a week in advisory.
There is discussion of starting and ending high school 10
minutes earlier next year. The schedule for finals week is
also being reviewed.
Staff appreciation is Wednesday, May 16th.
Prom is approaching on April 28th. There has been some discussion
of requiring breathalyzer tests before entering the dance.
David estimates that up to 50% of the students that attend
dances drink alcohol either before or after the dance.
We are beginning a campaign to determine “social norms”
for Beaverton High School, and a self respect campaign before
prom.
The student council election process is being reworked in
order to get more students involved.
April 27th at 9:15 is the Prom Assembly.
COUNSELING: Karen Stabeno
Ms. Stabeno presented a program detailing many aspects of
the counseling department. She informed us that BHS ranks
at the top in student success in the Oregon University System
Colleges and Universities. Our students typically are very
well prepared when they get to college.
The counseling department is developing several means of
communication and is considering a quarterly newsletter.
Meeting adjourned.
