BHS Volunteer Meeting Minutes
April 1, 2005

Committee Reports

Counseling – Everything is going really well. Laurie is talking to a few people to see who can take over leadership next year.

Staff Appreciation – This will be held on Wednesday, May 18. Mark your calendars.

Mentoring – Fifteen mentors are being trained this week. Rita Morgan has mentioned that if there are more mentors there can be more kids. If you are interested in mentoring during school hours, please contact Denise Velaski. The chair of the Beaverton Chamber of Commerce is looking for chamber members to help with the mentoring program.

Scholarships – Don’t forget, scholarships aren’t just for seniors. Make sure your child checks to see if any scholarships apply to him/her.

Student Liaison – We need to find a chair for next year. Your main job is to find chaperones for dances. This is not a time consuming job. All you need to do is send out a request for help, and follow up with those that responded. If you are interested, please contact Anne Ward.

Vice Principal’s Report

On April 26th, there will be a Suicide Prevention Awareness night at 7:00 p.m. Experts from the community will be there to discuss the current problems facing our children today. This is something for parents and their children.

Vice Principal’s Report, Continued...
On May 19th the Beaverton Police department will be holding a gang awareness and prevention night at the Beaverton High School cafeteria. This is for all high schools in the area including Hillsboro and Portland area schools. There will be an interpreter available.

There was a question about the article in the paper in reference to Merle Davies. The article was a little misleading. At this time MD is not available for use. The front is still in good shape, but the rest of the school will have to be demolished at some time in the future. At this time, there are no set plans as to MD’s future.

Miscellaneous

Site Council is looking for parent representatives. June 1st is the deadline for applying. Applications are in the office at BHS.

Principal Tea will be on May 6 at 9:00 in the Community Room at BHS. All committee chairs are asked to attend and bring some kind of snack. This tea is a great way for all newcomers to get a chance to meet the principal, tour the school, and find out ways to get involved at Beaverton.

A suggestion was made to condense the information on the front of the volunteer form. If you have any other suggestions about the form, please contact Anne Ward.

The Grad night rummage sale will be on May 14 at Beaverton. If you want to set up a table and sell things contact Jan Armstrong at 503-292-9611. The first $100 you earn will go towards Grad Night. Tax deductible forms will be available. If you don’t have anything to sale, come on by anyway to check out the great deals.

The school board is currently looking at adopting new Math and Social Studies books. Currently there are some questions as to what type of Math book to go with. The board will vote on April 4th. These books will be used next year.

Adjourned at 11:00a.m.

Next meeting will be held on Friday, May 6, 2005 at 9:00 in the Community Room at BHS.
